The Story Behind The Song: Episode #6 - Surgery from the CD "M&R Rush"

Imagine yourself in an operating room, hooked up to all these machines, keeping you alive as you are drifting away into unconsciousness and then into a dreamlike state. That's where the first 42 seconds of the song, Surgery, are supposed to take you. In order to accomplish this, M&R Rush brought in recording producer, Harry Brotman who is known for his imaginative eccentricities and Harry nailed it on this song. Breathing machines, blood transfusion machines, anesthesia drip as well as heart and brain monitors are not only in the beginning but kept on life support throughout the song, as drums, keyboards, guitars, and vocals enter and leave the operating room. He even has Carl, on the AXXE synthesizer, simulating laser surgery before John's blazing guitar solo. This is one of M&R Rush's most memorable songs and many people claim that Surgery is their all-time favorite M&R Rush song. Carl wrote it, Roger sings it, Marty tinkers with some electric drum sounds and the band has a lot of fun with this one.
LYRICS
I’ve had a broken heart before but it won’t be broken anymore
I had Surgery I had Surgery
I was going out of my mind, thinking about you all the time
So I had Surgery I had Surgery
Cut you out of my heart out of my soul out of my head
Cut you out of my dreams you won’t be hanging over me when I’m in bed
Cut you out of everything important to me and now that its done
Yes I’m finally free from it all once again
You thought you had me under your thumb
And when you call I would come
But I had Surgery I had Surgery
You thought you had me under your spell
But baby you can go to hell
So I had Surgery I had Surgery
Cut you out of my heart out of my soul out of my head
Cut you out of my dreams you won’t be hanging over me when I’m in bed
Cut you out of everything important to me and now thats its done
Yes I’m finally free from it all once again
Yes I’m finally free from it all once again
